Dr. Stephen Cooper

Chief of Staff

Dr. Cooper moved to Manitoulin soon after completing his residency in Montreal. He wanted to work in a small hospital that delivered babies and in a setting close to the water.   After 2 years of working in Quebec he wanted to try working in a different province. He has been very pleased with his choice of Manitoulin Island and is starting his 25th year at MHC. Dr. Cooper spent four years serving as President of the Medical Staff before becoming MHC’s Chief of Staff in 2007.

Dr. Cooper participates in the Quality Assurance, Executive, Strategic Planning, Fiscal Advisory & Transfusion Committees. He is currently the Chair of the Small Hospital ED LHIN 13 Committee and the Chair of the OMA Section of Rural Medicine.

Dr. Cooper is married with 2 children & enjoys sailing in the summer and cross country skiing in the winter.


Dr. Mike Bedard

President of Medical Staff

Dr. Mike Bedard is a graduate of the University of Ottawa Medical School and Residency Program. Mike first joined the medical staff of Manitoulin Health Centre in 1992 and has worked at both hospital sites during his tenure on the Island. Mike continues to maintain Active privileges at Manitoulin Health Centre while working as a full-time family physician at the Assiginack Family Health Team.

Dr. Bedard was elected President of the Medical Staff in November 2015. In his role as President of Medical Staff, Dr. Bedard sits on the Medical Advisory, Resource and Quality Assurance Committees as well as MHC’s Board of Directors.

Dr. Bedard is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) and a member of the Manitoulin Wilderness Medical Educators (WildER Med), a Not For Profit Corporation, of like-minded practitioners and learners interested in furthering their knowledge base in wilderness and outdoor medicine.


Derek Graham

Mr. Graham holds a Master of Business Administration in Health Care from the California College for Health Sciences, as well as diplomas in Health Care Administration (OHA) and Medical Laboratory Technology (Algonquin College).

Derek Graham is President and CEO of Manitoulin Health Centre, a position he has held since 2007. Derek functions as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Board.

Derek has enjoyed a health care career spanning more than 30 years, with experience at the front-line care level, as a registered laboratory technologist in Ottawa, followed by management positions within laboratory services, senior leadership for diagnostic services in the USA and Northern Ontario, leading to his current CEO tenure. Derek was also elected in 2010 to serve on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Hospital Association.

Derek and his wife Debbie enjoy a rural lifestyle, including boating and fishing from their home on Lake Manitou.


Terry Olmstead

Terry Olmstead is a Human Resources Professional with 35+ years of experience in Logistics, Retail Operations and Manufacturing.

Currently Terry is providing Human Resources Consulting services through Teros H.R. & Compliance Services Inc. to the Manitoulin Group of Companies and other clients. Previously he held the role of Director of Human Resources, Manitoulin Transport Inc.

He has been a speaker at several HR Industry Conferences focusing on the area of Harassment & Discrimination and has developed many Internal Training Programs.

Terry is currently a member of the Sudbury and Toronto Chapters of Human Resources Personnel Association.


Chris Bousquet

Chris was born and raised in Little Current and returned to make it his permanent home in 1992. Since October of 1993 Chris has worked in both the real estate and insurance fields under his family’s business.

Chris has volunteered in his community as a firefighter, coast guard auxiliary member, curling club as well as for various other clubs and organizations.

Chris enjoys boating, fishing, cottaging, travelling and downhill skiing – all with his son and partner, Abbie.

Chris was elected to the Board of Directors in June 2013 and currently serves as the Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee and Vice-Chair of the Executive and Governance committees.


Barbara Baker

Barbara, raised on the Manitoulin during the summer months for most of her life, moved to Little Current with her husband Dale in November of 2013. Recently retired from TELUS, Barbara has a solid financial background and owns her own financial business known as $umthing that teaches basic money management and computer skills.

Barbara has an event planning background and has worked on large events from World Skating Championships, Pope Visits and G7 Summits. Barbara is a great believer in giving back to whatever community she lives in, and has been a board member for a variety of community groups in the provinces in which she has lived.

Barbara along with her husband’s small business, have a fundraising event each year, known as the Boobscarf campaign, which raises $2000 annually to go towards cancer research. In 2014 the funds went to the Manitoulin Chemotherapy Program in Mindemoya. The 2015 Campaign will go to the Sudbury based Ontario Breast Screening Program.

Barb is currently the Chair of the Audit Committee and also serves on the Strategic Planning and Governance Committees.


Sal Brunetti

Sal Brunetti is a CPA, CA, CMA Professional with 30 plus years of experience in accounting/finance and logistics.

Sal is currently working with Manitoulin Transport Inc. as the Director of Pricing and is a member of the Gore Bay Rotary Club.

Sal enjoys cycling, skiing and travelling.


Nancy Bryce

Nancy was elected to the Board of Directors in June 2015 and serves on the Resource, Governance and Audit Committees. She has a life-long connection with Manitoulin Island and currently makes the area her full-time home.

Nancy worked at Cambrian College in Sudbury for 25 years and has worked part-time for Cambrian and the Rainbow District School Board in the Manitoulin area for the last several years. During her employment she has worked as a professor and also in the area of Disability Services. Nancy has participated in many volunteer positions including the board of Manitoulin Family Resources, Manitoulin Centennial Manor Auxiliary, and the board of The Industrial Centre for Women.

Nancy enjoys boating and exploring the Manitoulin and the many opportunities for hiking and nature watching that it provides.


Angela Becks

Angela Becks has been a Manitoulin Health Centre Board Member since 2006.  During her tenure on the Board, she has served on the Quality Assurance, Resource, Strategic Planning, Executive and Fundraising Committees. Angela is currently the Chair of the Fundraising Committee and sits on the Resource and Strategic Planning Committees.

Angela has retired from the Teacher Profession.  She holds a BA, OCT membership, Primary, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Qualifications, and Specialist Certification in both Special Education and Deaf Education.  Her work experience was both urban, in the cities of Guelph and London and rural, on Manitoulin Island where she was privileged to work for the First Nations Community in M’Chigeeng, the Manitoulin Board of Education, and the Rainbow District School Board of Education.

Angela’s association with the Ontario Trillium Foundation as a member of the Grant Review Team for Sudbury, Algoma, Manitoulin, and Cochrane is another volunteer position much enjoyed.


Cora Hayden

Cora Hayden was elected to the Board of Directors of Manitoulin Health Centre in 2011 and currently participates on the Resource and Fundraising Committees. During her tenure on the Board, Cora has also served on the Executive and Quality Assurance Committees.  Cora is currently the Chair of the Resource Committee.

Cora returned to Manitoulin in 2010 after more than 40 years in Sudbury. She has a background in business administration and accounting and has worked in the private and public sectors, with the majority of her experience in the not-for-profit area. Cora has participated as a volunteer in many areas, including Sudbury Rainbow Crime Stoppers, Sudbury Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Canadian Cancer Society. She washonoured with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for community service in 2002. Currently she participates on her community recreation committee and the Friends of Misery Bay Provincial Park, and works part-time in the judicial system.

Cora and her husband, Art, live in the Evansville – Elizabeth Bay area.


Jane Hohenadel

Jane was elected to the Board of Directors in June 2016 and serves on the Quality Assurance, Governance and Audit committees.

Jane has an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and graduate degrees in Epidemiology and Statistics. She has over 20 years of experience in the health care system in Ontario, both in the public health and Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) sectors as an epidemiologist and decision support specialist.

Jane and her husband, Randy, have lived in the Municipality of Gordon/Barrie Island since completing their home building in late 2008.


Judy McKenzie

Judy joined the Board of Directors as the Mindemoya Auxiliary President in April 2015. Judy currently serves on the Fundraising, Nominating and Audit Committees.

Judy moved to the Island in 2007 after retiring from a career in Transportation in Sudbury. She worked in Sales and as a Regional Sales Manager.

Judy and her husband, Ralph quickly became involved in volunteer work on the Island. She volunteers for the United Church Women, the Providence Bay Curling Club and Community Living Manitoulin. Judy also still belongs to a Sudbury branch of the IODE.

Judy enjoys knitting, scrapbooking, gardening and curling.


Ann McGregor

Ann McGregor was appointed to the Board in 2015. She was born and raised in New York, received teaching degrees in Physical Education, Health and Recreation in Illinois and worked toward a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counselling from Western Michigan University. After teaching for seven years she moved to Birch Island where she and her late husband owned and operated their marina and campground for 33 years.

Ann has served on numerous boards. Her position of Secretary/Treasurer of the Waubetek Business Development Board of Directors for twelve years was her most rewarding. She also sat on the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands council and the Manitoulin Centennial Manor Board. She keeps involved with the Whitefish River First Nation’s Rainbow Lodge and Cabins, the Birch Island Construction Company, Shawanosowe School and volunteering her time to fundraising activities. Her other interests are landscaping and gardening, boating, reading and spending time with her grand children.

Ann currently is the Chair of the Nominating Committee and also serves on the Strategic Planning and Quality Assurance Committees.


Dennis McGregor

Dennis McGregor was appointed to the Board in 2015. He worked as a Marketing Manager for a major Insurance company in Toronto for 15 years, before returning to his home community of Whitefish River First Nation (Birch Island) in 1992, were he went on to work as the Band Economic Development Officer for another 17 years until his semi-retirement in 2010. Dennis has served on numerous community boards including; Mnidoo Mnising Employment & Training, Whitefish River Development Corporation, Waubetek Business Development Corporation, and the Great Spirit Circle Trail. Dennis currently works for Cambrian/Bousquet Insurance in Little Current, and brings a strong business, economics, and insurance background.

Dennis and his partner, Georgina, enjoy travelling, camping, and volunteer work in their community, and Dennis has recently become involved with the Manitoulin Panthers Hockey Association.

Dennis is currently the Vice-Chair of the Resource and Nominating Committees.


Dave Sylvester

Dave Sylvester joined the Board of Directors as the Little Current Auxiliary representative in April 2014. Dave is the Past President of the Little Current Auxiliary and currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, as well as participating on the Fundraising Committee.

Both born and raised in Kirkland Lake, Dave and wife Leona retired to Little Current in 2008 to be close to family. They have been involved with the Little Current hospital auxiliary since their arrival.

Dave worked for 40 years in sales and management in Kirkland Lake servicing the mining and industrial needs throughout the north. He has been volunteering for many years in his community and parish. An avid sports fan he is forever faithful to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays.


Debby Turner

Debby Turner was elected to the Board of Directors in June 2012 and is currently the Chair of the Quality Assurance Committee, Vice-Chair of the Fundraising Committee, as well as being a member of the Executive Committee.

Debby was born and raised on Manitoulin and has spent most of her life here. Debby owns and operates a 5th generation family business which has been serving Manitoulin for over 134 years.

Debby has been active in the Community through years of volunteering with the Little Current Figure Skating Club, the Ski Club, Community Service Advisory Committee, Downtown BIA, Classic School of Dance, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Downtown Beautification, and Centennial Bridge Committee.

Debby is married with 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren. She enjoys skiing, sailing, gardening and time spent at their cottage.
