Meet Our Board
Dr. Stephen Cooper
Chief of Staff
Dr. Cooper moved to Manitoulin soon after completing his residency in Montreal. He wanted to work in a small hospital that delivered babies and in a setting close to the water. After 2 years of working in Quebec he wanted to try working in a different province. He has been very pleased with his choice of Manitoulin Island and is starting his 20th year here.
Dr. Cooper spent four years serving as President of the Medical Staff before becoming MHC’s Chief of Staff in 2007. Dr. Cooper participates in the Quality Assurance, Executive, Strategic Planning, Fiscal Advisory, Transfusion and OBS Committees. He is currently the Chair of the Small Hospital ED LHIN 13 Committee and the Chair of the OMA Section of Rural Medicine.
Dr. Cooper is married with 2 children & enjoys sailing in the summer and cross country skiing in the winter.
Dr. Maurianne Reade
President of Medical Staff
Dr Maurianne Reade is a rural family physician who trained at the University of Alberta, graduating in 1986. She has worked for the past 10 years at the Manitoulin Health Centre. She spent nine years as the Infection Control Officer for the MHC, and since the autumn of 2010, has been the President of the Medical Staff.
Dr. Reade appreciates the breadth of practice available in a rural setting and particularly enjoys emergency medicine. She is thankful on a daily basis for the financial support of the hospital auxiliaries in funding the bedside ultrasound machines. She is delighted to be a community based preceptor affiliated with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, as well as one of the organizers of WildER Med, an annual wilderness medicine conference here on Manitoulin.
When not at work, Dr Reade enjoys rural life on Manitoulin includinghiking,reading and snowshoeing.
Derek Graham
Chief Executive Officer
Derek Graham is CEO/Executive Director of Manitoulin Health Centre, a position he has held since 2007. Derek functions as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Board.
Mr. Graham holds a Master of Business Administration in Health Care from the California College for Health Sciences, as well as diplomas in Health Care Administration (OHA) and Medical Laboratory Technology (Algonquin College).
Derek has enjoyed a health care career spanning more than 30 years, with experience at the front-line care level, as a registered laboratory technologist in Ottawa, followed by management positions within laboratory services, senior leadership for diagnostic services in the USA and Northern Ontario, leading to his current CEO tenure. Derek was also elected in 2010 to serve on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Hospital Association.
Derek and his wife Debbie enjoy a rural lifestyle, including boating and fishing from their home on Manitowaning Bay.
Georgie Hari
Chair, Board of Directors
Georgie has been actively involved with the MHC Board of Directors since 2008, serving on various committees and currently is the Chair of the Board, elected in June, 2010.
Although raised on the Manitoulin, most of her adult life was spent in Sudbury and Thunder Bay where she spent many years employed at Bell and retired in 1997 as General Manager – Northwestern Ontario. A second career in healthcare started in 1998 when Georgie became the President and CEO of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation responsible for managing the team that raised over $25 million to assist with the building of the new health sciences centre. Recognizing the importance of healthcare in her community, she continued her work with the Foundation for 10 years establishing an annual program of over $1.5 million. She retired in 2008 with her husband Terry to the Manitoulin.
Georgie has contributed to her community by serving on various boards and holding different officer positions during her lifetime including the United Way of Thunder Bay, McKellar Hospital Foundation, Fort William Rotary, Thunder Bay Business Women, Centennial Museum of Sheguiandah and others.
Charles Adam
Member, Board of Directors
Charles Adam is in his second year as member of the Board of Directors and the Fundraising Committee. He holds music and education degrees from the University of Windsor and is a teacher at Manitoulin Secondary School. He has enjoyed teaching for more than 30 years. He is a past division president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation. He is also a humanist wedding officiant. He enjoys his home and family at Honora Bay.
Angela Becks
Member, Board of Directors
Angela Becks has been a Manitoulin Health Centre Board Member since 2006. During that time she has served on the Quality Assurance,Resource and Fundraising Committees. Angela is the Chair of the Fundraising Committee.
Angela has retired from the Teacher Profession. She holds a BA, OCT membership, Primary, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Qualifications, and Specialist Certification in both Special Education and Deaf Education. Her work experience was both urban, in the cities of Guelph and London and rural, on Manitoulin Island where she was privileged to work for the First Nations Community in M’Chigeeng, the Manitoulin Board of Education, and the Rainbow District School Board of Education.
Angela’s association with the Ontario Trillium Foundation as a member of the Grant Review Team for Sudbury, Algoma, Manitoulin, and Cochrane is another volunteer position much enjoyed.
Dorothy Gordon
Member, Board of Directors
Dorothy has been a member of the Board of Directors of Manitoulin Health Centre since 2007 and has served on the Strategic Planning and Quality Assurance committees. Dorothy is the current Chair of the Audit Committee.
A retired teacher, Dorothy has a B.A. from Laurentian University, a B. Ed. from Nipissing University, an Ontario Teacher’s Certificate and qualifications as a Special Education Specialist. While pursuing a teaching career she was involved in local leadership roles in the Teachers’ Federation. She was on a steering committee which was successful in starting a Counseling Service on the North Shore. At present she also serves on the Library Board in the Municipality of Central Manitoulin.
Dorothy has operated her own Income Tax preparation office for the last 7 years having learned the business in some years spent in Saskatoon.
Cora Hayden
Member, Board of Directors
Cora Hayden was elected to the Board of Directors of Manitoulin Health Centre in 2011 and participates on the Fundraising and Quality Assurance Committees.
Cora returned to Manitoulin in 2010 after more than 40 years in Sudbury. She has a background in business administration and accounting and has worked in the private and public sectors, with the majority of her experience in the not-for-profit area. Cora has participated as a volunteer in many areas, including Sudbury Rainbow Crime Stoppers, Sudbury Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Canadian Cancer Society. She washonoured with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for community service in 2002. Currently she participates on her community recreation committee and the Friends of Misery Bay Provincial Park, and works part-time in the judicial system.
Cora and her husband, Art, live in the Evansville – Elizabeth Bay area.
Gerry Mack
Member, Board of Directors
Gerry grew up in Montreal and later attended Carleton University where he earned a B.Sc. in Chemistry and Math. As his chosen career, he taught in the French River for almost 30 years in the Science Department, specializing in Chemistry, Physics and Math along the way earning his B.Ed. and his Principal papers. For the last several years of his career, he had an administrative position running a complete program for the minority English language students.
While in the French River area, he initiated a local Lions Club and was pleased to serve as Charter President for several years, one year as Zone Chairman and sat on the Governors Cabinet for several years.
Since 1973, he and his wife, Ria have operated a tourist resort on Lake Kagawong and they are still in love with Manitoulin Island. They are the proud parents of two children.
Gerry has served for six years on the MHC Board of Directors.
Michael Shain
Member, Board of Directors
Michael Shain is the Executive Director of the Manitoulin Legal Clinic, and has held this position since 1990. He was called to the Bar in 1985 and practiced criminal and family law before assuming his position with the Clinic. He holds a BA. and MA in English Literature and an LLB. Mr. Shain practices clinic and poverty law and in 2007 was certified by the Law Society as a Specialist in Workplace Safety and Insurance Law.
Mr. Shain has served on the Board of the Manitoulin Health Centre since 2005. He is currently the Chair of the Resource Committee.
Donald J. McGraw (Shokan)
Member, Board of Directors
Donald J. McGraw (Shokan) was elected to the Board of Directors in June 2011 and is currently a member of the Strategic Planning, Fundraising and Audit committees.
Donald graduated from the Native Lands Management Program at Cambrian College in 1995 and has demonstrated a commitment to life-long learning, including programs through Algoma, Trent and Ottawa universities. Donald sits on many boards including the Manitoulin Legal Clinic and numerous AOK Committees.
He has held previous positions on the National Aboriginal Land Manager's Association and served as Vice Chair of the Ontario Aboriginal Lands Association.
Donald is a resident of the Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation and works as the Housing / Lands Manager for the Sheguiandah First Nation.
Suzanne Norris
Member, Board of Directors
Suzanne Norris has been a board member for Manitoulin Health Centre since June 2009. She currently acts as Chair of the Quality Assurance Committee and Vice-Chair of the Executive Committee.
Her previous volunteer experience includes board membership for Manitoulin Family Resources as well as for Registered Ontario Massage Therapist Association; Area Captain for the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation; and Co-ordinator for the Terry Fox Run.
Suzanne moved to Little Current in 2000 from Woodstock, Ontario where she worked for The Thames Valley District School Board in an administrative capacity. She currently works out of her home in Little Current doing Massage Therapy and Acupuncture.
Suzanne spends her free time doing yoga, attending book clubs, gardening, and anything else that involves being outside.
Leila Thureson
Member, Board of Directors
Leila Thureson is a retired elementary school teacher who joined the Board of Directors in 2008, representing the Mindemoya Auxiliary. Leila is a member of the Fundraising Committee. Leila contributes to her community through her roles as President of the Mindemoya Auxiliary, Secretary/Treasurer of the Mindemoya United Church and Secretary / Treasurer of the Mindemoya UCW. Leila resides in Mindemoya with her husband. She enjoys curling, knitting and crossword puzzles.
Greg Bond
Member, Board of Directors
Greg Bond was elected to the MHC Board of Directors in June 2011 and is currently a member of the Resource and Strategic Planning Committees.
Greg was born and raised on Manitoulin and has spent most of his life here. He has a B.A. from the University of Western Ontario and has a background in Business Administration, Purchasing and Government relations. He is proud to have worked for 30 years for Manitoulin Transport in Gore Bay.
Greg has been active in the Western Manitoulin Community, coaching soccer and hockey for many years. He was also a Board Member and Chair of the Gore Bay Lyons Memorial United Church for several years. Greg currently manages the Western Manitoulin 5 &10 Road Race which donates all of its proceeds to local fitness and recreation projects in, and around Gore Bay.
Greg enjoys curling, running, reading and dogs of all sorts and sizes.
